Buying guide: Trial lenses and frames

Trial lens sets and trial frames are used for refraction, low vision and contact lens work. Complete sets in good condition hold their value.

What to check before you buy

  • Whether the set is complete: ask for a photo of the full case.
  • Lens condition: scratches, chips and markings legible.
  • Full aperture or reduced aperture lenses.
  • Trial frame adjustments: PD, temples and nose pads.

Common questions

How can I tell if a trial lens set is complete?

Ask the seller for a photo of the open case with every slot visible, and a list of any missing lenses.

Full or reduced aperture?

Full aperture lenses give a wider field of view; reduced aperture lenses are lighter and fit more easily in a trial frame. Many practices keep one of each.

Are trial lenses easy to replace?

Individual lenses can often be found, but matching a set can be harder. Check that the set you buy is complete.
