Buying guide: Auto refractors

Auto refractors and autorefractor-keratometers speed up pre-testing. Used units are a cost-effective way to equip a pre-test room.

What to check before you buy

  • Whether it is an auto refractor only or includes keratometry.
  • Accuracy: ask for a video of a measurement and when it was last calibrated.
  • Printer, display and connectivity to your EHR.
  • Table and power supply included.

Common questions

How can I check a used auto refractor is accurate?

Ask when it was last calibrated and serviced, and for a video measuring a model eye or a patient (with permission). Sellers can tick "Calibrated in the last 12 months".

Does it connect to my EHR?

Many do, by serial, USB or network. Ask the seller for the model and check with your EHR vendor.

Is an auto refractor-keratometer worth the extra?

If you fit contact lenses or measure corneal curvature often, a combined unit saves a separate keratometer and space.
