Buying guide: Edging equipment

An edger, usually with a tracer and blocker, is the heart of an in-office or wholesale finishing lab. Used and refurbished patternless edgers can cut the cost of bringing finishing in-house.

What to check before you buy

  • Whether the tracer and blocker are included and work with the edger.
  • Wheel condition and when the wheels were last replaced.
  • Supported features: grooving, drilling, safety bevels and the materials it can cut.
  • Software version and whether it connects to your lab software.
  • Water supply, pump and drainage needs, and the machine's footprint.
  • A video of it edging a lens, and recent service records.

Common questions

What should come with a used edger?

Ideally the tracer, blocker, chucks, wheels, water pump and manuals. Check the listing's "What's included" details and ask the seller about anything missing.

How can I tell if the wheels are worn?

Ask when the wheels were replaced and for a video of the edger cutting a lens; poor finish or chipping can mean worn wheels. Replacement wheels are also listed under Lab consumables.

Does a used edger need professional setup?

Often, yes: it may need calibrating after shipping. Ask whether the seller offers setup help, or find a technician under Services.

Will the edger work with my lab software?

Ask the seller for the model and software version and check its compatibility with your lab management or tracing software before you buy.
