Buying guide: Lensometers
Manual and automatic lensometers measure the power of lenses in the lab and dispensary. Used units are affordable and easy to check before you buy.
What to check before you buy
- Manual or automatic, and whether it measures prism, progressives and UV transmission.
- Calibration: ask when it was last checked against a known lens.
- Clean optics or display, with no scratches or dead pixels.
- For automatic models: printer, power supply and connectivity.
Common questions
Manual or automatic lensometer?
Manual lensometers are durable and inexpensive. Automatic ones are faster, easier for staff and can measure progressives and export readings. Choose based on volume and who will use it.
How do I check a used lensometer works?
Ask the seller for a video measuring a lens of known power. Sellers can also tick "Calibrated in the last 12 months".
Can it connect to my practice software?
Some automatic lensometers export readings. Ask the seller for the model and connection options, and check them with your software vendor.
