Buying guide: OCT
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is one of the most valuable instruments in a practice. Buying used can bring OCT into a practice that could not justify the cost new.
What to check before you buy
- Model, year and software version, and what scan types and analyses it supports.
- Whether the normative database and any licenses transfer to you.
- The computer and operating system, and whether it connects to your EHR.
- Service history and whether the manufacturer will support it.
- Installation, training and shipping arrangements.
Common questions
Does the software license transfer with a used OCT?
It depends on the manufacturer. Ask the seller exactly what software, modules and normative data are included and whether the manufacturer requires a license transfer.
Will a used OCT work with my EHR?
Ask for the model and software version and check with your EHR vendor which integrations are supported.
How is an OCT shipped and installed?
It should be professionally packed or crated, and usually needs setup and calibration on site. Check whether the seller offers installation, or find a technician under Services.
