Buying guide: Ophthalmic instruments

Ophthalmic instruments, from slit lamps and phoropters to OCTs and visual field analyzers, are the core of an exam lane. Buying used or refurbished from another practice can equip a lane for much less than new.

What to check before you buy

  • Year, condition and service or calibration history.
  • Photos of the serial plate, optics and any wear, and a video of it working.
  • Software version, licenses, databases and whether they transfer.
  • Included accessories: chin rests, tables, power supplies, covers and manuals.
  • Whether it needs professional installation, and if the seller can help.
  • Warranty, returns and how it will be packed and shipped.

Common questions

Who can buy ophthalmic instruments on EyeCareDirect?

Verified members can buy most instruments. Two kinds are restricted: surgical instruments can only be bought by licensed clinicians or practices with a licensed authorized purchaser, and ophthalmic lasers by ophthalmologists and by optometrists whose state scope of practice includes lasers.

Should I buy used, refurbished or new?

Refurbished instruments have been inspected and repaired, usually with a warranty. Used instruments cost less but come as they are, so ask for a video and service records. Each listing states its condition and warranty.

Will a used instrument work with my EHR or other devices?

Ask the seller for the model, software version and connection options, and check them with your EHR or device vendor before you buy.

How are delicate instruments shipped?

They should be packed with the optics protected and moving parts secured; large units often ship by freight. Sellers state shipping or local pickup on each listing.
